Veteran State Senator Won't Seek 10th Term

A veteran state senator from Eastern Carolina says he will not seek a 10th term this year.

Senator Charlie Albertson has represented Duplin, Lenoir & Sampson counties in the senate since 1993. Before that he was a state representative from 1989 to 1992.

Albertson, who turned 78 years old last week says it is time to "step back and find other ways to become involved in helping my community."

In 2008 Albertson was appointed co-chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. He also serves as secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

The announcement of Albertson's retirement came just before the district attorney for Albertson's home county said he wasn't going to seek re-election.

Last month Dewey Hudson told a Raleigh newspaper that he was considering a bid for state senate. But in making his announcement in Kenansville Friday morning, the three-term D.A. remained quiet on his future plans.
