Duplin Winery Founder Dies

The founder of Duplin Winery has died.

D.J. "Jiggs" Fussell of Rose Hill passed away Tuesday, just a week before he turned 97 years old.

In 1972, Fussell and his two sons planted ten acres of Muscadine grapes. Three years later Duplin Winery was founded. Today it's the largest winery in the south and produces over a million gallons of wine a year.

Fussell's funeral will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Rose Hill United Methodist Church. The family will greet guests following the service.

Just goes to show "Goodness grows in NC". Duplin winery got me to try wine, and actually enjoy it. Want to go to the tour sometime also.

i'm terribly sorry for their loss, but what a wonderfully long life he had. it's great to know he saw his dreams turn into such a successful and thriving business. i was just there yesterday taking a winemaking class with his son david. for those who haven't experienced duplin's wines because they don't like wine, you must give it a try. it's like taking a grape fresh from the vine. wonderful, wonderful stuff...

Wow he lived to be 97.....bravo for you Mr. Fussel. And Duplin wines are very good indeed. Must truly be something to the theory about moderate wine consumption of 1-2 glasses per day.....and I quote "Thanks to its alcohol content and non-alcoholic phytochemicals (natural occurring plant compounds), wine has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease."

Really good wine! I did not realize they operated on only 10 acres! Great place to visit too.

Sad to hear he has passed. His wines are some of the finest I've tasted in my life. I hope his family continues his legacy.
