A Newport woman was airlifted from where she crashed an SUV in Craven County to the hospital in Greenville.
Trooper Steve Brown says 44-year-old Christa Evans of Newport crashed while headed west on Highway 70 at Thurman Road in James City just before 7 a.m. Friday. Brown says Evans was driving a friend's SUV that she was not familiar with and was distracted; he says she was talking on the phone and adjusting the cruise control when she ran into the highway median. That prompted Evans to overcorrect to the right, and she hit a ditch just off the highway. The SUV flipped two or three times, Brown said, before coming to rest next to a tree.
Trooper Brown says crews had to cut off the top of the SUV to free Evans, and she was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center. Brown says Evans's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
