Sharene Kirby is the Teacher Of The Week for December 12.
Sharene has been teaching for 19 years. She is a teacher at Barber Elementary School in Craven County.
Sharene graduated from Western Carolina University and received an additional teaching license from ECU.
She has taught in Wilkes, Stanly and Wake counties, but she has taught in Craven County for nine years.
Sharene is beginning her fifth years as an Exceptional Children’s Inclusive Preschool teacher.
She writes: “My classroom is composed of both typically developing children and children who are developmentally delayed as identified with an IEP. The purpose of our classroom is to provide children with developmental delays and typically developing children the opportunity to grow and learn together in an environment that promotes cooperation and acceptance of individual differences, using developmentally appropriate practices in a variety of environments. My beliefs are that children are children first, before they are children with special needs and early intervention has a decisive and long lasting impact on how children develop and learn. I believe “play”, combined with adult facilitation and interaction is powerful and I believe all children deserve the opportunity to enter school ready to succeed!”
The person who nominated Sharene says she is tireless in her efforts to help her students overcome difficult obstacles and succeed.
