Vandals Destroy 25 Headstones In Pamlico County Family Cemetery

25 headstones have been knocked over and destroyed in a private family cemetery in Pamlico County. Authorities say some of the headstones were more than 100 years old.

Family members say they visit the Ed Stanley Brinson Cemetery every few weeks, but after hearing that many of the headstones had been damaged, Danny Piner says he made a special trip to the cemetery where he found several headstones knocked over and broken, and one grave was even broken into.

"This is a desecration against not only the graves but the family's memories and the things that they have to live with, and it's an insult to the community for someone to go around and do something of this nature," said Lt. Billy Jewel of the Pamlico County Sheriff's Department.

Lt. Jewel says the amount of damage could cost up to $4500- a cost the family will have to pay if no one comes forward. The Pamlico County sheriff's Office is offering a $500 reward to anyone who can offer information leading to an arrest, and Piner says he is also willing to offer reward money to anyone who can help them solve this mysterious case.
