Pitt County School officials say crisis teams will be available at DH Conley Thursday after a senior was killed in a car crash Wednesday.
Known to friends as Lupita, 17-year-old Guadalupe Argonmaniz-Ruiz died in a crash on Highway 55 in the Craven County town of Cove City Wednesday. Pitt County Schools says she was a senior at DH Conley and a soccer player.
There was a moment of silence in Lupita's honor at Wednesday night's athletic banquet at DH Conley. A school spokeswoman says the principal and grief counselors met with the soccer team before the banquet.
Charges are pending in the crash, which officials say was not weather-related.
Lupita was a passenger in the car driven by 23-year-old Samuel Gomez of Greenville. Troopers say Gomez went off the side of the road, over-corrected and hit a box truck coming from the other direction. The trooper's report does not indicate why Gomez ran off the road in the first place.
Two people in the truck were taken to the hospital in New Bern.
First Sgt. Kevin Rock says the teen was a passenger in a car that ran off Highway 55 West near Buzzard's Corner outside of Cove City.
