Tree Trimmer Shot In The Face Speaks Out

One of three people shot Tuesday when lawmen say a man opened fire on him and two others is talking with WITN.

Angelo Williams tells us he was the first of two tree trimmers that were shot on Tuesday while working on Streets Ferry Road in Vanceboro.

Williams lost his right eye in the shooting and is now at home and on the road to recovery.

He says even though he has no idea why he was targeted Tuesday, he says he's not bitter with John Jenkins, the man charged with the shooting spree.

Jenkins says, "I was about 20 yards away from him, so I was looking into the barrel of the gun and I looked into his eyes, and he told me "you better not run" and before he could get it out of his mouth, he shot me."

The 82-year-old Jenkins is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after officials say he shot Williams, another tree trimmer named Brian Holden, and neighbor Billy Dail.

Williams says he was shot with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Williams says, "I said to myself did he really just shoot me? And I could feel it was burning. It was a burning sensation where my eye was and in my forehead."

Williams says he turned and ran, holding a towel on his face to stop the bleeding. A woman driving by the scene stopped and drove him to the hospital.

As far as Jenkins goes, Williams says he's not holding any grudges. Williams says, "We're all human, we all make mistakes. Sometimes we take our mistakes too far or our anger too far."

Williams says he says he had never seen or spoken to Jenkins before Tuesday.
