Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative is warning its customers about a scam they say is preying on the panic of a cut-off threat.
According to CCEC, customers are getting calls saying they need to make an immediate payment on their utility bill or face cut off. The problem seems to be focused on Havelock, according to officials.
The cooperative reminds customers not to give personal account information over the phone, noting the cooperative does not call and demand immediate payment.
"We will never call our members to demand immediate payment," said Cheryl Slater, CCEC Vice-President of Customer Service. Slater added customers receive a past-due notice before a disconnection.
