There are four people vying for the role of sheriff in Craven County.
Chip Hughes and Ernest Thomas are the Republican candidates.
Hughes has more than 25 years experience in law enforcement. He was a long-time highway patrolman, a military police officer assigned to a drug investigation unit with the U.S. Air force, and a police officer in Trent Woods. He's currently the Interim Police Chief in Bridgeton.
It's Thomas' fourth time running for sheriff. The current River Bend police officer has served his country and Eastern Carolina. In 1976, he joined the Marine Corps and served as a military police officer for that branch of the military, as well as the army reserves. Drug enforcement is high on his list if he is elected as the next sheriff of Craven County.
You'll also find both Eric Smith and incumbent Sheriff Jerry Monette on the ballot. Smith was a captain in the Marine Corps and is a Vietnam Veteran. Smith also served as an agent with the State Bureau of Investigation.
