With two new Walmarts in one county, officials are discussing getting more law enforcement presence.
Pamlico County saw one store open in Oriental earlier this month, and a bigger Walmart will open in July in Grantsboro.
Town officials brought up police data from a Walmart store in New Bern showing that officers were called on more than 1,000 different occasions at the MLK location in the last year. Some are worried they too will see increased crime with the new stores.
"More traffic, more shopping, brings more problems," says Pamlico County Commissioner Pat Prescott. "I think you always see that with growth, but I don't think it's something we can't overcome. Right now, between cooperation between the town and the sheriff's department, I think we're probably adequately covered. If we see changes, of course we'll address it."
Pamlico County Sherriff Billy Sawyer says he did turn in justifications for getting another deputy to the Pamlico County Board of Commissioners.
Prescott says the issue will be discussed during a meeting Wednesday afternoon.
