A man riding a motorized wheelchair is dead, after police say he got hit by a car on a busy highway.
River Bend police say it happened on U.S. 17 Monday night around 9:00 p.m., near Pirates Road.
Killed was George Taylor of River Bend. Police say the 63-year-old Taylor was heading south in the northbound inside lane, when he tried to make a left turn across two traffic lanes into Efrid Boulevard.
That part of U.S. 17 is a four lane highway with a grass median.
Chief R.E. Matthews, Jr. says a teen was driving the car that struck the man. He says Taylor was heading to his home at Riverstone Assisted Living on Efrid Boulevard.
Matthews says no charges have been filed at this point. The chief notes that motorized wheelchairs must follow pedestrian rules in North Carolina.
The name of the teen driver has not been released.
