Officials: Stranger Danger Lessons Work

A local school resource officer says the Georgia girl who fought off a would be abductor is proof teaching kids about stranger danger works.

The 7-year-old fought to get free from a man trying to kidnap her from a Wal Mart on Wednesday.

Surveillance video from the store shows the girl getting grabbed by a man in the toy aisle. Authorities say she remembered her stranger danger lessons and fought until he let her free.

School resource officer Harold Bright teaches stranger danger lessons to students at Grover C. Fields Middle School in New Bern. But he says it's important parents reinforce those lessons.

The man who tried to abduct the 7-year-old was arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping. He was out on parole after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter in a suburban Atlanta county.

I am a mother of 2 children. My son at the age of 3 was holding my hand and his aunt's hand. In a split second he let go and immediately was gone. I wasn't a lazy or bad parent. There are those of us that have common sense. The store was locked down and luckily he was found. It does happen when the parents are being responsible.

Being a responsible parent, and keeping a good eye on them no matter where is also a good lesson. The aisles of Walmart, Target, or the mall are not good places to turn your head and expect 'someone else' to watch them. Parents need to be parents, and some of them are great, and some of them are just too darned lazy. Don't cry on T.V. after the fact; watch out for them while you have a chance. Step up and be a real parent.

Couldn't agree more!!! Some people really just don't seem to give a rip until after the fact and something tragic has happened.
