New Bern Police have identified a man that's believed to have drowned Saturday.
Officials say it appears 86-year-old Joseph Diello drowned in the Trent River near his home on Turtle Bay Driver in Olde Towne area of New Bern.
Police say a medical examiner is expected to sign off on drowning as the cause, with heart failure as a secondary cause.
Diello's wife told investigators that her husband told her he was going swimming after working on the boat dock. Officials say his body was found a short ways from the dock.
A man is dead following what police say appears to be an accidental drowning.
Sgt. Brown with the New Bern Police Department says that it happened near Turtle Bay Drive in the area of Olde Towne.
In a voicemail on the police department’s media line, Sgt. Brown says that the New Bern Fire Department worked in conjunction with police and citizens in the area with a boat to locate the man’s body.
Sgt. Brown says that the major case unit is working on this as an accidental drowning. A time for the incident was not indicated.
