Two New Bern Alderman are competing in a runoff election for mayor and we gave the candidates one last chance to address their voters before they cast their ballots.
Leading up to the election, Dana Outlaw and Sabrina Bengel spoke and answered questions in three different forums in front of the people of New Bern.
Now It's crunch time and we asked them one last question Monday: What is the most important issue that New Bern is facing right now, and as mayor, how would you address it.
Outlaw says, "Econ 101 is a scarcity of money. It doesn't matter if it's Wall Street or the city of New Bern and we as a city need to make sure we have and can forecast the projected revenues what our expenses are going to be. And the most important thing probably is to make sure that the employees of New Bern feel comfortable that we're not going to go into their co-pays and we're not going to furlough in the future before we do other things that we can do with the same amount of money."
Bengel says, "The most important issue that I'd like to dwell on is the coming together of all neighborhoods and all the citizens . We are a fabulous community. We have so many great things going on but we have lots of challenges so the first thing I'd like to do when I become mayor is get out into the neighborhoods and talk to the citizens and get my list of what the priorities are. I know the aldermen are working in those neighborhoods and they know what their neighborhoods need, but we're going to bring it together. I want to bring together this community like you've never seen it before."
Both candidates seemed pretty confident when we spoke to them, while at the same time, relieved that campaigning is coming to an end.
