Hundreds gathered Saturday to remember Representative William Wainwright from Craven County who died this past Tuesday.
Several people spoke at the funeral including Governor Beverly Perdue who kept things lighthearted as she spoke of her longtime friendship with Wainwright.
Wainwright was serving in his eleventh term in the State House of Representatives. He represented Craven and Lenoir Counties.
Friend of Wainwright, Victor Dove said, "He was a great guy. Very loving, had a great sense of humor. He would go out of his way to help anybody that he could." Victor Taylor said, "A lot of good laws and policies throughout the state, controversial laws that he fought for that he felt and knew that was right for the state."
The funeral took place at Grover C. Fields Middle School in New Bern. The service was followed by a burial ceremony in Havelock.
