Flight From New Bern Forced To Return After Landing Gear Problem

A US Airways flight to Charlotte had to turn around this morning after the pilot discovered a problem with one of the plane's landing gear.

Coastal Carolina Regional Airport director Tom Braaten says 50 people were on board the flight from New Bern this morning. He says the flight was re-routed back to the airport when one of its landing gear wouldn't retract.

Braaten says the plane made a normal landing at the airport and everyone was taken off the plane. Passengers from the 7:00 a.m. flight were being rebooked on other flights to Charlotte while mechanics looked at the airplane.

US Airways says it was Flight 4303, and involved a Dash 8 turbo prop airplane. A spokesman says a landing gear door did not close all the way, the pilot declared an emergency and they returned to New Bern out of "an abundance of caution."

The airport director says passengers told him that the pilot did a good job keeping them informed of what was happening.
