First F-35 B Delivered To Cherry Point

The first F-35B aircraft landed aboard Cherry Point and was introduced Monday by U.S. Senator Kay Hagan.

This is the world's first stealth, supersonic plane with a short vertical take off and landing.

It's the most expensive weapons program in our history, costing about 120 million dollars a piece.

The aircraft is at Cherry Point now for some modifications and maintenance. Eventually 16 of these planes will be stationed here.

Senator Hagan says that news is a huge step forward for our local economy and the future furloughed employees. She says, "Those modifications will be done right here with our engineers, with our technicians, our employees, and to know we have the skill sets, the knowledge, the history, they'll be staying with the F-35B for many many years to come. I think it speaks so highly of the training and the longevity and it shows the stability this depot has to Eastern North Carolina."

Lieutenant General Robert Schmidle says the first fleet of F-35 B's will be deployed to Japan in 2017.
