One person was killed and four others sent to the hospital Saturday afternoon after a two car accident on Highway 70 near Havelock.
North Carolina Highway Patrol Troopers say a Ford Excursion, driven by 54-year-old Kenneth Harper of Clayton, was traveling westbound on U.S. 70, just after 4:00PM, when the SUV and the boat it was towing, veered off the right side of the road hitting a traffic light post.
The vehicle flipped and struck another vehicle stopped at the light on the corner of Hickman Hill Loop Road.
Harper escaped the crash with non-life threatening injuries, however, troopers say his wife, 56-year-old Georgia Harper, died at the scene. Two other people were in the Excursion when the crash happened. Troopers say Kenneth Harper's sister, 52-year-old Kathy Barrow of LaGrange, is currently at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in critical condition with a brain injury. Barrow's boyfriend, 52-year-old Frank French, suffered non-life threatening injuries. Kenneth Harper and Frank French were taken to Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern.
Harper told troopers he didn't know how the crash happened.
Arianne Nolen of Havelock, the driver hit by the Excusion, sustained non-life threatening injuries as well.
Officials say the crash is still under investigation so no charged have been filed at this. Troopers say drugs nor alcohol are suspected.
