Driver Swerves For Deer, Car Flips Over

A Cherry Point Marine survived his car flipping over on a Craven County highway early Friday morning after he swerved to miss hitting a deer.

Trooper S.F. Brown with the Highway Patrol says 24-year-old William Simmon of Havelock flipped his car on Highway 17 about a half-mile south of Territorial Rd., just north of New Bern.

Trooper Brown says Simmon's Mitsubishi lost traction on some loose dirt and flipped all the way over. Simmon was wearing his seat belt and was not injured.

Simmon was cited for driving left of center and failing to maintain lane control.

This is season where the DOT says cars and deer are most likely collide. The collisions are more likely to occur just before sunrise and just after sunset. The accident on Highway 17 happened around 5:30 a.m.
