Some residents in New Bern say they're fed up with small, petty crimes in their neighborhoods and are looking to form a community crimewatch.
Contractor Shannon Corr is building a new home on New Street. A trailer with his tools on the lot was broken into Tuesday night.
Neighbors say this is the last straw: they say there have been many similar crimes since the beginning of the year. Police say since January, 39 similar crimes have been reported in the area.
Neighbors say they don't blame the police, but they're worried small crimes indicate a turning of the tide.
David Kraul says he talked to the police chief months ago about forming a community watch.
Police Chief Toussaint Summers says, "That's number one in crime prevention in local communities, is having a neighborhood watch- neighbors look out for neighbors."
For now, neighbors say they're planning on getting more involved in a community based watch as well as asking the mayoral candidates for New Bern what they're planning to do to clean up downtown.
