Code Purple Air Quality Expected This Weekend

Wildfires still burning will bring another weekend of unhealthy air for many here in Eastern Carolina.

Code Purple air quality conditions are expected for Carteret, Craven, Dare, Duplin, inland Hyde, Jones, Onslow and Pender counties both Saturday and Sunday. That means people who are sensitive to air pollution should avoid all outdoor physical activity.

Code Red conditions are predicted for Beaufort, Camden, Currituck, Lenoir, Pamlico, Pitt and Tyrrell counties, as well as the northern Outer Banks. Code Orange conditions could occur throughout the rest of Eastern Carolina.

The smoke is coming from the Juniper Road wildfire burning in Pender and Onslow counties and the Pains Bay wildfire in Dare County.

Foresters say both fires started from lightning strikes.
