The Coastal Women's Shelter in New Bern serving Craven, Pamlico and Jones Counties, is giving a new life to old cell phones to help local women in need.
The shelter is collecting old cell phones from the community to give some of their clients who can use them if they need to dial 911.
Shelter Executive Director Martha Hardison says, "The community has really stepped up to the plate this month in providing the cell phones for us. They have been generous in providing many more than we have been receiving in past and we are very appreciative of that."
The shelter sends phones that don't work off to a wireless company to be refurbished or recycled.
The wireless company then sends them back money that they use to provide services for local women in need.
If you have a cell phone that you no longer use, you can drop it off at the Coastal Women's Shelter at 1333 S. Glenburnie Road in New Bern.
The office number is 252-638-4509.
The crisis hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year at 252-638-5995
