Cherry Point Does About-Face On Canceling Air Show

More Video...

Less than a month after saying there would be no air show, Cherry Point has taken an about-face on canceling next year's event.

Back on December 6th the air station announced there would be no 2014 air show due to what it called major reductions in their budget for the coming year.

WITN heard reports last week that the cancellation had been reversed, but the air station wouldn't confirm anything until today.

The Marine Corps says this year's event will take place May 16th through the 18th.

No reason was given as to why the cancellation itself was canceled.

The event normally brings in thousands of visitors to the Havelock area over a several day period.

Previous Story

Budget problems are forcing the cancellation of next year's air show at Cherry Point.

The air station announced that Friday afternoon, due to what it called major reductions in their budget for the coming year.

The event normally brings in thousands of visitors to the Havelock area over a several day period.

Cherry Point's commanding officer, Colonel Chris Pappas, says their top priority continues to be supporting the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing "to train to go anywhere, at any time, to fight and to win." He said spending must be prioritized to ensure that is met.

For years the air show was an annual event, but several years ago was changed to every two years.
