NEW INFO: Bicyclist Dies After New Bern Charity Ride


A woman who was bicycling for a charity event in Craven County earlier this month has died from injuries after colliding with a truck.

State troopers say 69-year-old Nancy Swackhamer died this morning at Vidant Medical Center.

The accident happened on September 7th on Highway 43 near Spring Garden Road. The woman was taking part in the 25th Annual Bike MS Ride.

Investigators said 64-year-old Jimmy Ipock was driving his Ford F-450 behind the bicyclist, and tried to pass her. Troopers said the bicyclist tried turning left onto Spring Garden Road when the two collided.

At this time, no charges have been filed in the accident.


A woman bicycling for a cause over the weekend is now in critical condition at Vidant Medical Center after colliding with a truck.

Officials at Vidant Medical Center said Monday morning that 69-year-old Nancy Swackhamer was listed in critical condition.

Troopers said Swackhamer was riding a bike near the intersection of Highway 43 and Spring Garden Road during the course of the 25th Annual Bike MS Ride on Saturday.

Investigators said 64-year-old Jimmy Ipock was driving his Ford F-450 behind the bicyclist, and tried to pass her. Troopers said the bicyclist tried turning left onto Spring Garden Road.

Troopers say the two collided, and Swackhamer was first taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center in serious condition with broken bones and internal bleeding. She was then airlifted to Vidant Medical Center.

Investigators said charges are pending in this case.

The Highway Patrol is investigating an accident involving a truck and a bicyclist during the course of a bike race in New Bern.

Trooper J.H. Midgette says that it happened around 9:40 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 43 and Spring Garden Road during the course of the 25th Annual Bike MS Race.

Officials say that 69-year-old Nancy Swackhamer had been riding her bike on Highway 43 north. We’re told that driving behind Swackhamer in his Ford F-450 was 64-year-old Jimmy Ipock. Trooper Midgette says the two collided when Ipock went to pass Swackhamer and when he did that, Swackhamer tried to turn left onto Spring Garden Road.

Trooper Midgette says that Swackhamer was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center in serious condition with broken bones and internal bleeding. She was then airlifted to Vidant Medical Center.

Trooper Midgette says that charges are pending in the case.
