NEW INFO: 4 Vehicle Crash On Trent River Bridge

A four vehicle crash on a heavily traveled bridge in New Bern caused a big backup this morning.

Traffic on the west-bound lanes of the Trent River bridge was down to just one lane after the 8:45 a.m. accident. That caused west-bound traffic on U.S. 70 to be backed up into James City.

No one was hurt in the accident that involved a log truck and three cars. State troopers say the log truck was trying to get around a disabled vehicle on the bridge went three vehicles behind the truck caused a chain reaction accident.

Driving too slow causes accidents too. A lot of the aggression around here usually stems from people not getting out of the way of people trying to go faster. I agree that people also need to calm down, but everyone has a part in that. I was taught to drive defensively... a concept lost on many on the east side of 95. Someone comes up behind you, and you are in a lane other than the most right hand lane? Move over before they end up on your tail. In the right lane doing the speed limit and someone still wants to read the serial number on your renewal sticker? Slow down. They will pass you, and you can be on your merry way. Don't engage aggressive drivers, and everyone will get to where they are going a lot more safely.

You are all wrong, the reason we have so many wrecks is everybody wants to look at our pretty river and not drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I moved to New Bern in 2009, and I have never experienced such aggressive drivers as there seem to be in Craven County. There seem to be more and more accidnets where speed and tailgating are both involved. Slow down people!

You're right. Some drivers can't make the switch from Raleigh to New Bern, as far as speed limit. Funny; that's why they drive here like maniacs; to relax. They don't have a clue as to how us locals feel about their aggressive driving. Slow down; live longer.

Why do so many seem to have problems, navigating a vehicle over this bridge span? Use your signals if you are merging or changing lanes. Drive the posted speed limit and don't try to cut off a truck full of logs. You will lose every time.

It's hard to merge off, merge onto, and deal with three lanes of speeding traffic on both sides of that bridge, at the top. It's worse with out-of-towners who suddenly switch from the Washington side back over to the Morehead City side, and vice versa. Some are trying to do the posted, and others are trying to blow everyone out of the way.

    No, I was wrong.

If it's backing up into James City, that would be the EAST bound lanes.

Most accurately it is the Freedom Memorial Bridge, over the Trent River, in New Bern.
