Auditor Recommends North Carolina Ferry Changes

An audit of North Carolina's coastal ferries prompted by complaints from a former director has found some of his allegations were justified, while others were not.

State Auditor Beth Wood on Thursday released a review of the ferry division that concluded the agency violated Department of Transportation policy on relatives working together and also lacked detailed budgeting at ferry office locations. Those were among allegations raised by Harold Finch, who spent just two months leading the division before being fired last year.

The audit did not find evidence of other allegations by Finch such as extensive overtime to pad worker pay and questionable spending.

Transportation Secretary Gene Conti largely agreed with the audit findings and said tighter controls are in place on purchasing and making clear the family worker policy.
