Article Ranks New Bern Number One U.S. City Where Wealth Is Soaring

New Bern is now rated number one in an article about economic growth and wealth.

A lot of people are very happy to hear the city New Bern is soaring in wealth, but others are a little skeptical.

Janet Francoeur has owned Carolina Creations, a small business in downtown New Bern, for 25-years. She has seen the good and the bad when it comes to local economy. She says, "This year people really seem positive about the economy, even more so than the last couple years."

Her view is right in line with a recent article from 24/7 Wall Street, that basically says New Bern is recovering well from the recession.

The article is titled "9 Cities Where Wealth Is Soaring." New Bern is ranked number one.

Kevin Roberts, the director of the Chamber of Commerce, says, "Do I think there has been uniform soaring of wealth? Probably not. But things are improving, and people are hopeful."

The article says the median income has gone up from about $32,000 to $40,000. But New Bern is still way below the national average of $51,000, so some feel that the city has quite a ways to go, especially those who see the faces of unemployment every day at the Employment Security Commission office.

24/7 Wall Street looked at data from the U.S. Census Bureau and concluded that a typical New Bern resident earned 25.3 percent more between 2010 and 2012 compared with the prior three year period between 2007 and 2009.
