Charges Filed In Pitt County Fatal Crash

Charges have been filed against the driver of a car involved in a crash that killed a pregnant woman.

The Highway Patrol says John Isenhart of Vanceboro faces misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charges in the death of 32 year old Crystal Patterson of Alliance.

She and her son were traveling on Highway 43 near Calico in Pitt County last Thursday, when troopers say Isenhart's vehicle crossed the center line and hit Patterson's vehicle. Isenhart say he was blinded by the sun.

Previous Story:

A head on collision Thursday morning claimed the life of Pamlico County woman, who family members say was pregnant.

The Highway Patrol says, 32-year-old Crystal Patterson and her son David Patterson were heading North on Highway 43, when a Nissan pickup truck, crossed the center line, hitting them head on.

Crystal Patterson died at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Her sister says David Patterson was treated and released from the hospital.

This is the second fatal accident in two months near Highway 43 and 102 in Calico. In May, a motorcyclist was killed when a tractor trailer slammed into him.

The driver of the pickup truck, John Isenhart has not been charged, although the Highway Patrol says charges are pending. Authorities say alcohol, drugs or speed don't seem to be a factor in the crash.

Isenhart told troopers he was blinded by the sun which caused him to cross into oncoming traffic. Isenhart's passenger had non-life threatening injures.

to joe: i read crystal's story on cafemom and think about your family often. i have a sophia of my own, and i cannot imagine such a loss. you are always in my thoughts and in my heart, today as when you first shared this sad news. i will be thinking of you, your family, crystal and sophia on 14 oct and hope that you are able to find some small comfort in the proceedings. i wish you the strength to use anger and tragedy for a good cause, so that no other children are taken too soon or left without their mother.

First of all yes two car at 55 could create this type of damage, but there was no sun ,this occured before 9:30???? I have been to this area everyday since then and that day and the day after was overcast...Lets just look at the truth here, also there were no skid marks,no attempt to slow down,i myself have been blinded by the sun or headlights at night first reaction is to the right and or slow down not turn into traffic...Crystal was a very special and caring person, and because of a stupid mistake i have lost her and my daughter, and thats the plain truth...... Crystal and Sophia in my thoughts and prayers forever

I am truly sorry for the families loss ; It is going to be tough to get through this for both families ; I only prey that incidents like this one will lead to tougher drivers license laws and hopefully people will start paying more attention while behind the wheel of a car or airplane ; God bless you all -
