The Sounds Of Freedom Ramp Up

The sounds of machine gun fire and racing boats are about to become a part of the atmosphere on the North Carolina coast.

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is hosting a Navy Special Boat Team this week as it prepares to deploy. Day and night operations until 10 p.m. are part of the exercise, and the teams will shoot live ammunition.

Base officials warned residents that the teams will train through Feb. 26, including weekends. The exercise takes place in and around the Neuse River, and Brandt and Piney islands.

James of New Bern, as a reader of Agatha Christie, her detective Hercule Poirot always referred to the brain as his "little gray cells".

I have not seen the 130s out there, but when you see the trail of a rocket and the explosion, and then 15 to 20 seconds later you can hear it AND feel it; that's not blanks. I normally see them while Drum fishing at night. Like I said, very cool & intimidating.

Back: Thanks for the tip! Something else I'd love to see [obviously from a safe distance] would be a C-130 gunship firing it's miniguns at ground targets at nighttime. I understand that it's a truly awesome spectacle.

Careful, James... Anon is correct. The term racing is being used in it's inflected form as a verb as these are not "racing boats," but boats (type is irrelevant) that will be racing up, down, and all around the waterways.
