Boy Scouts Rename Camp For Eatery Entrepreneurs

The Eastern Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts is renaming a camp that honored a former congressman in favor of a family of local entrepreneurs.

The East Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America has renamed its summer camp on the banks of the Pamlico River in honor of Rocky Mount's Boddie family.

The family owns several restaurant chains and has long supported the Boy Scouts.

The camp was named after Herbert C. Bonner, a former congressman from Beaufort County who died in 1965. The Bonner bridge connecting the main islands of the Outer Banks is also named for him.

The Boy Scouts have camped along the Pamlico River for 40 years since the property was purchased from Weyerhaeuser and private landowners.

Hey scout council, tell the Boddie's to chip in an extra 100 bucks and a couple tins of trail's end popcorn, and you will change your name to the "Boddie Scouts of America". See you wouldn't even have to change the initials.

Shame on you BSA!! It's bad enough I'll be watching the "Rose Bowl presented by Citi" tomorrow. Thankfully, my Eagle Scout Badge will never be Sponsored by a company.

This just proves what money can buy. Give the BSA council enough money and put the condition that the money be used for the camp and they will get their way. Scouting has always had its financial problems, but I think that the council should have asked the Scouting community to comment on the name change. In my humble opinion, it will always be Camp Bonner South.

I disagree with the name change because there is a 40 year history behind the name and Camp Bonner brand. Camp Bonner is known throughout the nation as a great camp, and the name change may cause some challenges with out of council units visiting. Instead I wish they would have renamed the entire reservation the Boddie Scout Reservation, because the Boddies DO do so much for Scouting, not only at Camp Bonner South, but all the camps: Charles, Sam Hatcher, Pamlico Sea Base, etc. They do so much, that they do deserve recognition and thanks. But I think they should have renamed the reservation after them instead. The most important thing is that Scouts still have a place to go camping on weekends throughout the year and for a week or more at summer camp. No matter what the name Bonner South/Boddie, the camp will always be OUR scout camp. The summer camp staff will continue to perform to the highest standards set by myself and all other staffers who came before them.

I am displeased that council did not send a opinion poll to the scouts and their families. I believe that it would have been less troublesome if they named the area Boddie Scout Reservation and leave the camp camp Bonner. To me it will always be Bonner.

Who cares what the name of the camp is. As long as it helps the scouts. It's just a name, just like names of anything else and why wouldn't you name a building or something for someone who donated a lot of money to say thank you.

There was always confusion over Camp Bonner North or South...true. Camp Bonner (North) and Camp Hannah Bonner remain the same. (and they were donated by the Bonner family)

You can buy just about anything these days, congressional votes, name of camps, etc. Follow the money.

It is just like football bowl games, sporting arenas. If you got money, you get your name on something. I'm just waiting for sponsorship of military bases, lol. Lets hear "Soldier of Fortune Camp Lejuene" or "Guns & Ammo Fort Bragg" or "Pope Air Force Base by Boeing"
