New Bern Drawbridge Almost Done!

The New Bern Drawbridge that has been under construction for the past two and a half years is nearing completion.

This from DOT officials who say contractors have been testing the new drawbridge for the past 2 weeks.

The deadline for completion which had already been extended was December 12.

Contractor Balfour Beatty has filed for an additional three day extension that would send the project into the winter months phase.

This is when no liquidated damages can be collected by the state.

DOT Resident Engineer Johnny Metcalfe says the bridge is expected to be finished in about a month.

The winter months phase applies to all DOT contracts and runs from December 15th through March 15.

As for the fish migration, that was well known during the original contract. It's no excuse for the delay that has helped to finish off several struggling downtown businesses and cost New Bern untold amount of tourist dollars.

This means BB could stretch this out until March 15 without penalty. The bridge will be done in "about a month"? What does that mean? Remember when it was going to be done in time for the 300th anniversary, which begins Dec 31?

The reason it has taken so long is the state won't allow construction IN the water during certain months of the year due to fish migrations, spawning, etc. This bridge definitely could have been built faster if they were allowed to do it.

I agree Rocky,This contractor built the Manns Harbor Bridge and the state had the same problem with them then.

Sounds like the state should cross this contractor off their list for future projects. Is this December deadline that leaves out liquid damages self inposed by the state? rediculous!

It is absolutely ridiculous how long it has taken them to re-build this little bridge and now yet another delay.
