Craven Community College Smoking Ban Gets Off-Campus Complaints

Trustees at Craven Community College's New Bern campus will meet Tuesday to consider amending an August smoking ban to create a designated smoking area on campus.

College officials say the ban has pushed smoking students, faculty and staff at the coastal school to the outskirts of campus. They say that's polluting air for surrounding neighbors and creating a hazard in the roadways as smokers compete for space with motorists.

Trustees say neighbors have complained.

A statewide smoking ban takes effect in January.

Adult...if the CCC Trustees would have used some logic and instead of pushing their smoking problem out to bordering neighbors, streets and properties, then they would not have to have this meeting. The initial decision should have included on campus designated smoking site(s). The neighbors did NOT creat the problem and should not have to accept CCC's problem.

No one owns the outside air to decide who can smoke and who can't.

Seriously people!!! This is an issue you have got to be kidding me. We have drug dealers, and rapist and parents who are selling their kids for prostitution and you are "WORRIED" about this!! I think people need to get things straight. Wasting tax payer dollars for this "meeting" instead of putting the money where it needs to be!!!

Me and I'm Right, if I do not want people to smoke because I do not like the smell of it, should I impose my belief on others? Should I force them to pick the path I have chosen? You dad made his decision, not a good one mind you, I lost my pop due to the VA hospital for routine surgery. You know, like government healthcare. Smoking freedom for those that do? We should not disscriminate by making it mean, we should try reason, so they will quit on their own.

You are absolutely right. I don't smoke and never have. I cry every night because my daddy died from smoking. Because of his bad habit, my special father is dead because of cigarettes. Yep, I shed plenty of tears ...

Joe your post is very fair and I will agree. This problem is coming down from the state and the problem will eventually hit other college facilities. I can tell you that when Raleigh makes the rules, they don't understand the implications. Sort of like the stupidity at RDU Airport, either have a smoking area inside the airport, inside of security, you can accomodate "your customers". They tell me Atlanta has smoking areas in all terminals there. They find it saves money in the security side. Well, people are not going out of the airport and staying in secured areas......truth vs practicallity.
