Craven Community College To Reconsider Smoking Ban

Leaders at a North Carolina community college will discuss changing the campus smoking ban following complaints from neighbors about off-campus smoking.

The Sun Journal of New Bern reports that trustees at Craven Community College's New Bern campus will meet Tuesday to consider amending an August smoking ban to create a designated smoking area on campus.

College officials say the ban has pushed smoking students, faculty and staff at the coastal school to the outskirts of campus. They say that's polluting air for surrounding neighbors and creating a hazard in the roadways as smokers compete for space with motorists. Trustees say neighbors have complained.

A statewide smoking ban takes effect in January.

Back in 1976 (9th grade for me) I use to smoke. But @ 15, it was illegal for me to smoke. At the time, laws weren't enforced like they are today. People weren't fined for underage smoking. After the final bell, my buddies & I would walk 5 feet off campus and smoke. Since we were considered "off campus", school officials looked the other way. But after complaints from concerned/outraged faculty and parents they decided to suspend us for 5 days. They claimed if we walk off campus, we must keep walking and not return that day. Once we return to get on the bus to go home, we are seen as if we never left the campus and "busted" for smoking on campus. A loophole, so to speak. Seems like the case here, too! Things are getting too "controlled" in this country. Next they'll be enforcing strict food laws. Places like McDonalds will disappear. I can't wait! "I'd like one Tofu burger...and two unhappy meals"
