While sales of existing homes nationwide increased more than forecast last month to the highest level since February 2007, experts in New Bern say they're only managing to break even.
Homer Ray with Century 21 Zaytoun Raines says the military is a driving force in the Craven County market and that about a third of their customers are military families. More than 50 percent of their home sales are under $179,000 and the $8,000 tax credit has helped keep the numbers on par here.
Ray says from about $200,000 to $450,000 sales are pretty quiet, but that a newly implemented $6,500 tax incentive could help.
Experts are hopeful that an influx of Marines coming to the area could help increase sales.
