School Board Wants Changes At Railroad Crossing

The Craven County School Board plans to ask state lawmakers to exempt school and activity buses from stopping at a railroad crossing on Highway 70 in James City where there have been numerous accidents.

A crash two weeks ago at the crossing claimed the life of a Cherry Point Marine when his car slammed into the back of a stopped bus. The speed limit is 50 miles an hour in that zone.

Department of Transportation and other state vehicles are already exempt from stopping at the crossing. Officials believe school buses should do the same.

The school board is scheduled to meet with legislators next Friday to discuss the issue.
