Hospital Room Service

One hospital in the east is promoting a healthy lifestyle by changing the way it serves patients.

Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern says it is the first hospital in the region to provide food service at a patients request.

The new room service style patient delivery system is designed to give patients what they want and teach them healthy eating habits based on their diet.

Hospital officials expect less food to be wasted this way because patients are getting what they want instead of having little or no choice.

The new at your request menu is available from 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

You're right, Anonymous in Greenville. It is a nightmare. You have trays coming at all times of day to all patients that can order. You have diabetics that you have to watch what they eat due to insulin. Forget about trying to keep accurate intake and output for patients! You can't keep up. When you are taking care of 6 or more patients, it is almost impossible to keep up with meds, new orders and all the trays coming and going. Some say it's no different that having family bring in outside meals, but it is. Unfortunately, those that sit behind the desks in the offices of management don't have a clue. I'd love to see them work the unit I work on and keep up with patient care and the usual that comes with it and then try to do what they expect us to do. They need to put the decision making in the hands of the ones that actually WORK the units instead of the ones that work the units on paper from behind the safety of a desk!!!

Good luck to them. A version of this was attempted at the EC heart institute when we first opened, and it was a nightmare.
