NEW INFO: Pedestrian Struck; Woman Charged With DWI

A New Bern man is in critical condition after police say he was the victim of a hit and run just after midnight.

Arrild Force and his brother were walking down South Glenburnie Road when a black Mitsubishi Eclipse struck him. The vehicle then left. The 23-year-old man is in a Wilmington hospital.

Police say they found the Eclipse on Tomlinson Boulevard and charged its driver, Brittany Hanigan with DWI. Police say Hanigan already has a pending court date later this month in Charlotte for another DWI charge.

The 24-year-old Hanigan is in jail on a $15,000 bond.

Police say they are still looking for a passenger in the Eclipse and other witnesses in the case. They also say additional charges are expected.

This happens while the state is discussing giving DWI drivers their license back after 10 years and giving DWI drivers a 5th chance before loosing their license.

She should go to jail for a long time, she didnt even learn her lesson the first time , now my good friends brother my die because of sheer stupidity and ignorance. What does it take for a fool to learn a lesson? Hit the boy and got in her car and left, no dialing 911 or nothing, no remorse at all. I truely hope justice gets served and I pray this young man will live to see another day. Love ya Wes n Im always here for you.

And there is a Bill getting ready to pass that will give her and all of our drunks, their drivers license back! Drinking and driving kills...the system kills just as many by giving "slaps on the wrist". There is nothing wrong with someone making a mistake and learning from it but to do the same thing again...thats when the system needs to STEP UP to the plate! Like I've said before, they will take more action when a drunk or repeat offender takes the life or seriously injures their loved one! I know we all have rights but it will always rest in the minds of those who let these types of people walk free...I could have saved a life today but I made it possible for this person to kill again. Magistrate's need to stop letting these folks sign their own bond and walk out just hours after we remove them from the street! Whats up with that????

Please get these people off of the road - enough of the light sentences for drunk driving - give them the max.

Sad thing is that she can lose her license in NC for life and go to another state like Texas and set up resdiences with a PO Box and be back at it here in NC. There are agreements with bordering states like SC and Virginia but there is always a way around the law.

if you have a dwi you should loose your liscence until your courtdate period. i have seen it many many times before they never learn. judicial system favors those who have money or know how to manipulate the system. just look at all the celebrity's who get charged then have a slap on the wrist for something that anyone else would have been locked up for. the judicial system needs an overhaul cause its all screwed up if you do the crime you pay for it. unfortunatly though on this one my cousin is the one who had to suffer and is now struggling for his life when she shouldnt have even been on the road. the only thing that can be done is go after the courts and the system to do the same for everyone no matter what there status in society is.

She had better be glad she isn't in Iran. They will stone you to death for an offense like this.
