As the economy continues to sour and the need for basic survival grows, the shelves are becoming bare at food banks across our region.
Some Craven County social workers are trying to restock those shelves and earlier this month started the freedom from hunger campaign.
Workers were encouraged to bring in one non perishable item each week. Their goal by the end of the month is to reach three thousand canned items.
Food Banks like the Salvation Army say they are struggling and can barely afford to help people with their utility bills.
