Ashes Of Fallen North Carolina Fisherman Sent To Home County

The ashes of a North Carolina fisherman who died when a scallop boat sank off the New Jersey coast will be brought back to his native county.

The family of Tarzon "Bernie Mac" Smith says they plan to bury his ashes in a Pamlico County cemetery between his two nephews who died in the March 24 accident.

The Sun Journal of New Bern reported that he will be buried between Royal Smith Jr. and Timothy Smith.

Commercial divers recovered the body last week from the 71-foot fishing boat Lady Mary. The boat sank about 75 miles east of Cape May, N.J., killing six crew members. One crew member survived.

A joint Coast Guard-National Transportation Safety Board investigation into the sinking is ongoing.
