A suspicious package found at a restaurant put New Bern police on alert, but it turned out to be a false alarm.
South Glenburnie Road was closed by the New Bern police department from Highway 17 to Cardinal Avenue while an explosive device team investigated the suspicious package, which was discovered at Arturo's Mexican Restaurant.
New Bern police chief Frank Palumbo told WITN's Ken Heineck LIVE on WITN News that the package was found Wednesday but was not reported until Thursday. The chief said the address was suspicious, that it was from Michigan to Michigan. The chief said the explosive team investigated the package and discovered presents wrapped up inside a larger box. The presents were golf balls and a book on flowers.
The roadway and the Blair Square Shopping Center were reopened shortly before 12:30 p.m.
Several businesses surrounding the restaurant were also closed but are now open.
