Here's a blast from the past: A replica cannon from the Civil War era will now stand guard at North Carolina's Fort Macon.
The operational cannon weighs 4,200 pounds and is 20 feet long. It traveled Wednesday from Wayne Community College in Goldsboro to the Fort Macon park near Morehead City, making stops in Kinston and New Bern along the way.
State park system spokesman Charlie Peek says officials purchased the cannon for about $19,000, and students at Wayne Community College have been working for more than a year to build a carriage to hold it.
Fort Macon currently has two inoperable cannons. The state park staff will be training a crew to fire the new one in demonstrations starting early next year.
