Strong winds have closed down state ferries crossing the Pamlico Sound.
The state ferry system says all runs on the Pamlico Sound, Cedar Island-Ocracoke and Swan Quarter-Ocracoke routes, have been cancelled today due to safety reasons.
They says winds are blowing 40 miles per hour sustained, which makes it unsafe for the boats to cross the sound.
Anyone with a reservation for today is advised to call 800-BY-FERRY (293-3779) and press 2 to speak to the reservation center to obtain a refund.
The reservation center is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
The ferry system says the Hatteras-Ocracoke route is running on the half hour to accommodate traffic to Ocracoke.
