A new type of wind turbine made in North Carolina has the potential to save people in the east between 25 and 45 percent on their utility bills each month, but the start up cost to have one at your home is steep.
The Greensky Wind Power Company out of Raleigh unveiled its wind turbine Thursday in Morehead City which is much smaller than the gigantic ones you are used to seeing pumping away on California hillsides. It can generate energy at wind speeds as low as 5 miles an hour. The net cost of putting one in is between 5 and 6 thousand dollars if you use state and federal tax incentives.
"Our turbine is completely silent. Our turbine does not kill the birds, and our turbine with it's direct drive generator- we make our own generators hand-made with a direct drive product. Therefore we have less maintenance issues," said Greensky CEO Quentin Ankri
Other cities in the state are starting to take notice. Ankri says Wilmington and Asheville have both shown interest, and 2 turbines are going up at Ocean Isle Beach within the next 2 weeks.
