A mother whale and her young calf were found washed ashore in Carteret County.
The adult pygmy sperm whale and her calf were found at Cape Lookout National Seashore Wednesday, according to the Carteret News-Times.
The paper says the mother was already dead when it came onshore inside Lookout Bight. The Marine Mammal Stranding Network determined the best option for the calf was to euthanize it. There is no place in the state to bring the calf, and scientists have not found a way to replicate the mother's milk of a pygmy sperm whale.
Officials did not find any evidence of a fishing net.
