Power has been restored to residents of Harkers Island after a line of powerful thunderstorms knocked off power to the entire island Wednesday night.
Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative says lightning struck the island's substation, leaving some 1,300 homes and businesses in the dark. Crews this morning were still replacing protective equipment on power lines and in the substation. They say power came back on around 9:30 a.m.
“We had one lightning strike, if not multiples,” said CCEC Line Superintendent Shannon Inman. Power went out about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday on the island.
While power was out, the island maintained water thanks to a generator.
Other damage was reported in Stella and Deerfield Shores area and those were repaired within an hour.
