Store Owners Charged With Posession Of Bath Salts

Carteret County deputies arrested two store owners early Saturday morning and charged them with possession of bath salts.

According to deputies Isam Asab Elquza and his wife Nehad Isam Elquza own and operate the “In and Out” convenience store across from East Carteret High School.

Deputies say the pair came to the scene of the “98 Cent Store” in Morehead City early Saturday morning where police officers and deputies were executing a search warrant.

Deputies searched their vehicle and located 1 gram of bath salts.

Sheriff Asa Buck says Elquza told him that the bath salts must have been left in his vehicle and that he did not know it was still there.

Sheriff Buck says he then informed Elquza that it did not matter; he is in possession of the illegal drugs and that he should know better due to the fact that he has been selling Spice and Bath Salts for months and is well aware that these substances are now illegal. It is his responsibility to make sure that he is not in possession of these drugs.

Sheriff Buck says, “I think it is quite fitting that someone who has been selling this poison in our community is now charged with the criminal possession of the same substance that he has been selling to people all these months simply to make money. The people who have been selling spice and bath salts know full well what these substances are being used for and their dangerous effects. They should be ashamed of themselves. They are morally deficient and now they are criminals in the eye of the law."

The new law banning spice and bath salts became effective on June 1st.

Isam Asab Elquza and Nehad Isam Elquza were both charged with Possession of MDPV (Bath Salts) and each received a $1,000 secured bond.
