The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the population of North Carolina is now approaching 9.9 million people.

The bureau released new population estimates for 2013 Thursday. The state's population from the 2010 census was 9.5 million.

The numbers show the state's southeast corner is one of the fastest growing areas in America.

Onslow showed a 4.1% increase since the 2010 census, Pitt rose by 3.6%, while Dare grew by 3.2%, Carteret by 2.9%, and Duplin County by 2.7%.

On the decline, Tyrrell County had the highest drop in population in the state with a 6.7% loss, while Bertie lost 4.4%, and Washington County dropped 3.8%.
