Surface water sampling is ongoing after thousands of gallons of untreated wastewater may have made it's way into a waterway in Carteret County.

The town of Newport in Carteret County says it had a discharge Sunday night of 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater from a sewer main manhole located on Westfield Road. Officials say the wastewater may have entered the Newport River of the White Oak River Basin.
