NEW INFO: School Bus Accident Sends 24 Students To Hospital

A truck driver has been charged after his vehicle struck a loaded Carteret County school bus Monday.

Beaufort police say 24 students from East Carteret High School were taken to Carteret General Hospital, along with the truck driver, Milton Adams of Beaufort. All injuries were minor, according to police.

The crash happened around 3:45 p.m. at Professional Park Drive and Troon Way. Police say as the bus was heading down Professional, the truck struck it near the right rear axle, causing it to separate from the bus's frame.

Police say Adams ran through a stop sign. He told police his brakes failed when he tried to stop at the intersection. Adams was charged with failing to yield the right of way.

Previous Story

More than a dozen students were sent to the hospital after a school bus accident this afternoon in Beaufort.

Police Chief Steve Lewis says the accident happened on Meeting Street when the Carteret County Schools bus was struck by a small truck.

The chief says there were no serious injuries, while the school system characterized them as all non-life threatening.

The school district says 14 students from East Carteret High School were taken to Carteret General Hospital. The bus driver was not injured.

Police say the accident remains under investigation.

Back injuries are not felt right away. Some of the students were complaining from their backs. My son being one of them.

None of the kids were even really injured, everyone was just being overly precautious about whiplash. I know several of the people who were on the bus, not to mention the bus driver. No idea about the truck driver, but then it was his fault the crash occured, evidently. Still, there's no reason for an uproar at all.

still our government insists seat belts are not needed on buses. If any of you try to drive sans seat belts you get an expensive ticket. I have even seen in court child custody hearings where one parent got a ticket for not having their child in car seat properly or not in seat belt and the other parents lawyer used this to question if they were the best person top care for the child, yet every day millions of kids get on buses without seatbelts

Please people do not think bus drivers are the safest people around. Every day I get behind buses on Wharton Station road between 264 and 17. There are 2 buses that run stop signs, pull out in front of cars at intersections and one pulls off the road and turns around in the middle of the road with cars behind him. Also in front of my house a bus pulls down beside my house and backs out on to a very busty road with obstacles like a house and trees blocking there view. I also do not understand when I was a kid we had 1 bus stop. It seems in front of a single kids house is a bus stop now. Most are only 50 feet away from each other. People that is just stupid. Beside aggravating drivers in the continual stops the kids of today are babied.

When is this going to end when these people stop paying attention to school buses. It was an incident in Martin County that someone ran stop sign and pulled right in front of the school bus. The bus drivers are in charge of the children on that bus, and they got to make sure they safe, and it drives me crazy to know that people keep having run in with the school buses!!!

Yeah the incident from martin county involved one of the buses from the school I drive for..The driver is still shaken up about the incident..I have had several close calls when people just assume we are going so slow and pull right out in front of us..People please pay attention to us because it is bad enough we have to focus on kids and the highway but when we have idiots who do not know how to drive, it makes the job more stressful..Being a school bus driver is a unappreciated job..but I still love it..
