An extra 850 feet of runway is expected to make a big difference for a local airport.
A groundbreaking is planned Wednesday to extend the runway at the Michael J. Smith Field in Beaufort in Carteret County, according to the DOT. The runway will be extended and the pavement strengthened to allow larger corporate aircraft to use the airport.
$3.1 million in state and federal money will pay for the extension of the runway in Beaufort from 4,200 feet to 5,000.
